Bennie

The Exceptional Bull Elephant Who Accepted Help and Returned with Trust

Bennie, the adult bull elephant who arrived at Elephant Sands in 2015 with a serious foot injury, has a truly remarkable story of resilience, trust, and ongoing connection with the humans who care for him. When the veterinary team was finally able to sedate and treat Bennie’s wounded foot—a rare opportunity because injured bull elephants typically react with aggression—the team was amazed by his calmness and willingness to accept help.  The treatment involved cleaning, disinfecting, and medicating Bennie’s foot wound carefully. The vet team expected that after healing, Bennie would return fully to the wild and no longer need human assistance. However, Bennie surprised everyone by returning not only once but repeatedly. His trust in the Elephant Sands humans continued to deepen, displaying a unique bond that is seldom seen in wild elephants.

Even after his injury treatment, Bennie continues to visit Elephant Sands, sometimes disappearing from view for up to a year, only to come back when water runs low—like he knows this place offers safety and care when he needs it most. His repeated returns and friendly demeanor astonish and warm the hearts of the staff and visitors alike.

Bennie is loved and respected by all at the lodge. Beyond being a survivor, he acts as a gentle guardian of Elephant Sands, keeping a watchful eye that protects the lodge and its inhabitants from more aggressive bulls. Yet, he is also playful and occasionally mischievous, reminding everyone that despite the trust and bond he shares with humans, he remains a powerful wild animal with his own personality.

The story of Bennie is a powerful symbol of hope and the profound connections that can form between species through compassion and care. Bennie’s journey from a wounded bull to a trusted friend embodies the spirit of Elephant Sands—a place where trust can flourish, bonds are respected, and nature and humans coexist in harmony.

meraai - the banded mongoose

Meraai, the baby banded mongoose rescued and raised by Saskia at Elephant Sands, has a truly unique personality shaped by her extraordinary upbringing. Growing up alongside the lodge’s dogs, Meraai has often mistaken herself for one of them, adopting playful, social behaviors that endear her even more to the staff and guests. This close companionship with the dogs has influenced her so much that she sometimes behaves like a small dog—her boldness, her love for human attention, and her spirited antics often surprise and delight everyone around her.

Despite this close bond with humans and canine companions, Meraai remains a wild animal at heart. She roams freely around Elephant Sands during the day, indulging in her natural instincts by catching bugs and exploring the bush. Yet she also enjoys affectionate cuddles from people, showing an affectionate and trusting side that is rare for wild mongooses. Her feisty streak shows that she is maintaining her wild nature, and the staff make a conscious effort to encourage her independence, preserving her natural behaviors and spirit.

Meraai’s unique personality shines brightest during the lodge’s swimming activities, when she often becomes overwhelmed by the excitement and noise. In these moments, she displays a protective instinct, as if feeling the urge to safeguard the swimmers—a charming and unusual behavior that reveals her deep attachment to the lodge family.

Despite efforts to reintegrate Meraai with a nearby wild mongoose group, she has remained separate, as the wild mongooses have not accepted her. This reflects the challenge of straddling two worlds: Meraai is both a beloved family member at Elephant Sands and a wild creature who retains her independence and individuality.

Meraai’s story embodies the spirit of Elephant Sands—a place where freedom and wildness are respected, where unexpected friendships blossom, and where each creature, no matter how small, plays a unique and cherished role in the rich tapestry of life. Her journey from a tiny rescued baby to a feisty, playful, and loving mongoose is a testament to resilience, trust, and the deep connections that can develop between humans and wildlife in the heart of the African wilderness.
